Timor road trip 1

My housemate Graham, a local Timorese student named Leopoldo and myself hired a troop carrier and set off to explore the country over 6 days. Timor certainly has potential!

A run down city hall in Baucau, about 90km east of Dili.

Leopoldo had never been to the beach

This was one of the better schools we came across.

Jaco island. the most eastern tip of Timor. A chance to put my fins to the test.

see snake?

Leopoldo showed us around his small village (Baunoma) high in the hills. This is a typical Timorese hut - each one has a different function and the designs of the tops differ between them

Graham's first time snorkeling with his new gear. He let Leopoldo have a go and within 5 minutes he had lost the mouthpiece for the snorkel. We think he may have eaten it.

Graham was presented with a Tais scarf which had his name embroided on it. I got a ubiquitous one - could have something to do with the fact that Graham is funding Leopoldo's uni fees.

Leopoldo's aunty makes Tais fabrics using the thread taken from whatever garments they can scrounge up.

Front of the school

Baunoma primary school - no blackboards, windows or floors.
