The view from the Whanganui River Road down into the valley below.
The muscle-bound mountaineers successfully scale the steep mountain behind the lodge...
...and run down again just in time for dinner. After doing the climb myself later in our trip, I can't imagine how John managed it carrying Emily the whole way in his arms. It is almost vertical and covered in a combination of thistles and loose dirt. It would have been only slightly harder to climb a fresh oil slick. Emily, clearly, is jubilant that she's still alive (and anticipating a roast lamb dinner...that's our little carnivore!)
Tim, looking very rugged and outdoorsy, along the bush trail in the farm valley.
It's called a bush tub. No need for anything complicated like a water heater, just light a wood fire underneath and bathe under the stars.
A giant zip wire at a neighborhood playground? Sign me up! The playgrounds in this country are amazing! Clearly people here are more interested in having fun than in avoiding lawsuits.
Jennifer, who has quickly moved beyond Junie B. Jones books and into Tolkien, is reading a bit above a first grade level at this point in the trip.
The lemon squeeze in all her glory!
