Marsden’s Travel Diary

Location: Heraklion, Greece

MapWe had a fabulous day yesterday with visits to the village of Zaros, monasteries, and the caves and beach at Matala the main highlights. Evie enjoyed the hospitality of the locals with a man just appearing at their table to open a water bottle for them when no one at the table had been able do it. Tasting the local delicacy of snails was an experience for some including Kathrine and Anna but the general feeling was they wouldn't eat them again. Sophie enjoyed the caves and the connection of old and new as the caves are roman burial sites that were recently inhabited by hippies. The town now has a hippie festival too! For Zoe the highlight is being in Crete as it is a real change from anything we've done previously. The rooms and the hotel in general are lovely and the girls are enjoying some very delicious meals. The swim at Matala beach was a favourite for over half the group- how often can you say you went swimming in Crete! Bella commented on the compact nature of Matala as so much was in one place, caves, beach and shops! And we had time to relax here, our guide even extended the time available which the girls really appreciated.

Fiona had much trouble getting photos up last night with the computer crashing often, she will try for more pictures later today.
