Brenda’s Travel Diary

Monday, 11 Feb 2013

Location: Kahama, Tanzania

MapMonday, February 11th

It’s customary here in Kahama to present yourself to the local officials when you arrive in a town to do any business, so today we set off to meet with the District Commissioner (formerly Major Matala) and the District Executive Director. After signing in at their offices and giving a quick rundown of our proposed itinerary, we went over to the hospital for a tour. It’s always so great to see the changes that have been made over the past few years but we’re also reminded of how far there is to go. The nurses can write more about how they felt seeing first-hand the obstacles that the medical staff here have to overcome and the lack of resources, medical equipment and medications they are trying to work with.

One of my highlights of this evening was sitting out with the Pineridge staff, practicing our English/Swahili together while they were working. It’s always great to see them all, especially Joseph who looks after us all so well!!!
They've all been asking about everyone they've met in the past...Denise, Sheena, Mary, HeiKe, Erin, Angela, Rylan, etc....... (Sheena, I think there's still a couple of guys here who are hoping to marry you!)

Tonight, Pene and I are sitting here on our computers we’re listening to an awesome thunder storm outside. There was one clap of thunder so loud that it sounded like a bomb going off over our head!!! The rain makes me think about all of the villagers sleeping in their grass-roofed huts with water dripping down on them. I look forward to the day when everyone can at least have a proper roof over their heads!!
