Brenda’s Travel Diary

Sunday, 10 Feb 2013

Location: Kahama, Tanzania

MapSunday, February 10th

Sunday morning we set off to change some money and were excited to find out that the bank was open for four hours. We were told that this was only the second Sunday they had done this and I guess the locals hadn’t found out yet. Normally there’s a crowd of them waiting in long lines in the hot stuffy room. Getting to the front of the line takes a while when a lot of the customers are business men depositing bags of money which all has to be counted numerous times. The highest denomination is equivalent to about $6.00 USD so it can take a while! People here also seem to have a hard time understanding the concept of ‘waiting their turn’ so will constantly push their way to the front. We ‘mzungus’ don’t put up with people budging in line so we did set a few people straight!!!
We ended up having a lot of money stuffed into our purses and knew that everyone in the bank had watched it go in. Considering this and the fact that it was beer o’clock, we decided to head back to our rooms to leave some cash there and have a refreshment.
Next, we had to get a couple internet modems and activate some phones. In Kahama that means go visit the guys sitting on the red plastic chairs on the other side of the ditch past the post office. It’s quite a process as those of you who’ve been here can attest to, but two hours later, we were set and looking forward to some laptop time later in the evening. Glen and Twyla joined us for dinner after their 10 hour drive from Moshi. Our team is now complete and ready for action!
