Location: Kahama, Tanzania

MapThis is one of Glen's entries......

Things continue apace here in Kahama. Some major infrastructure problems here in Tanzania - Kahama, a city of 250,000, has been without electricity for 3 days!!! Fortunately just as our guest house was running out of water we had made a decision to relocate to a hotel closer to the hospital, for an extra $3.00 per day, which has a generator, lights, water etc - one of our better decisions.

I had a good offer today, a guy at the roadside wanted to sell me a live chicken and offered to wring its neck then and there. I tried to explain in Swahili I was a vegetarian but I don't think he got the message!!

Still many sad cases at the hospital, a young boy died of a head injury after falling out of a tree. A old woman with a fractured hip - no surgery available, so is now in traction for several weeks with only a small chance of healing. The people here are very stoical and non complaintive seeming to accept their lot in life.

We went to the post natal unit today with 6 blankets knit by people from Penticton and Summerland. It was good altho there were more mothers than blankets. Our task over the next few days is to disperse the donated goods from the container shipped from Penticton by The One Person project. There are 30 sewing machines, hundreds of books and dozens of boxes of other 'stuff'. The challenge is to operate the cell phones and to communicate in Swahili/english sign language.

I'm not sure what is going on but there are 2 armed guards outside our hotel who we have not seen before - will give you an update - I hope!!!

The generator in our new place has just gone out so I am going to sign off.
