After our last morning with Franklin’s family we bid a sad farewell and headed back into the city with Jean-Claude. We decided to splurge and get a room with guaranteed electricity, hot water, a flush toilet and internet. The ONE room cost the same for one night as our TWO rooms for 4 nights at the Resthouse!!! That was hard to take. We REALLY needed showers though, so thought that paying for that alone was worth it!!!

Karen and I had noticed that her ticket home had her flying out one day later than mine so we decided to track down a Brussels Airlines office and plead our case. We hopped on pikipikis and headed to Mille Collines to the office. I just love cruising through the city on motorbikes…it’s exhilarating!!! Apparently we weren’t that good at negotiating with the Brussels staff because Karen is still flying out a day later than I. We did get to grab one more drink by the famous pool while we were there though!

By the time we were done, we were due to meet up with Denise. I was so excited to see her! She had travelled for 8 hours, up from Burundi to see me and was now at the downtown bus station. Denise is Costa’s sister-in-law (and Yves sister) who I’ve written about in the past. Right now they are awaiting the visas they need that will allow them to leave to be with Costa’s family. Denise was telling me that where they’re staying “isn’t good.” She said they are all alone down there and afraid to go out at night. I wish they could just come home with me now!!!

After arriving at our room, Denise opened all of her many gifts (almost a new wardrobe) and then she had a long Skype conversation with Costa. Her face was just glowing and later she kept telling us how mush she missed her family!! We enjoyed taking Denise out for a nice dinner and then back to our room for the night, sleeping three to a bed, in the African way! Lala Salama!
