Location: St Marys, Georgia, USA

Well I made it home and it has been a great experience for me. 179 days with the Corps of Engineers. There have been 3665 hits to this site which is amazing. I have posted a few pictures of my home coming.

Even thought my flight was delayed more than 24 hours and my luggage was lost and I had some really rude people to deal with, I am here in St Marys and happy to be here. Of course the return is bittersweet because there is so much left to be done in Iraq and I leave behind so many dear friends.

But coming home to all of you is the greatest joy I have ever felt. Thank you so very much for being part of my adventure and my life. Together we made a difference to the children of Iraq and more importantly to each other.

It is sad for me to think this is my last posting but it is time to close this chapter of my life and turn the page of a new adventure.

May the peace of the Lord be with you,
Most sincerely,
Allan

Well I thought I would be home by now but nothing ever goes as planned. Last night or should I say this morning at 4am my flight was cancelled. I ended up in a fancy hotel and am enjoying a big quiet bed. The free Arabic food is great the first good stuff I have had. Although I would much rather be home this is not too bad. I have been on the road since Friday and hope to be home by Thursday, keep your fingers crossed.

I didn't realize how much stress I was feeling until I had a truely good nights rest.

Hope to see you soon..... :-)

Friends, Family and Co-workers,

This is my last entry from Iraq. I start my 6 day journey home in about an hour and am very excited.

Thank you for making this adventure so wonderful and safe. Your prayers have paid off big time. I can wait to see you and tell you in person.

I was honored with awards yesterday and have posted some pictures at Award. I was also scheduled to receive an engrave coin from Lt General Van Antwerp (3-star) head of Corps of Engineers but his aid forgot the coins in the US. I was told it will be mailed. Only 8 of us including some who have already left will be recognized in this way and I am extremely humbled.

See you soon,
Allan

If I were counting the days I could tell you it is 2 days before I depart the IZ, and 7 days before I get home but I am not counting yet. I do love it here and will really miss it.

I can see a big change from when I came and I hope it continues.

Last week I sent my foot locker home including my rain gear and umbrella which I never used. So today it is raining for only the 2nd time since I have been here. I understand Camp Victory near the airport has turned to mud but in a few days it should be dust again.

I stuck a few more pictures in the Misc January folder and have so many pictures that I had to buy another harddrive.

See you soon and thanks for your support, prayers and well wishes,

Friends, Family and Co-Workers. As my time starts to run down rapidly I must say thank you once again for your great support. This is a great place to work because a individual can make a difference. A friend of mine recently met the President and I asked if ask Mr. Bush to give me a raise. Mr. Bush answered yes as soon as Iraq has electricity 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Oh well, I thought I was doing good.

I have also posted a few new picture in Misc January for your viewing pleasure. This is my last week in the IZ but will still take me an additional 6 days to get home once I leave here. Travel is a pain but also kinda neat when nothing happens.

I just mailed a foot locker full of stuff home. I don't know how I collected so much stuff. I can't wait to show you some of it.

See you soon,
Allan

Friday is my half day so I slept until 7:45. If I had looked out my window at that time I would have seen SNOW! Yes it actually snowed in Baghdad today. There is still a very slight drizzle outside and you can see your breath. That is a long way from the 120 degree days of a few months ago. I guess this is good practice for my trip to Wisconsin in February.

I aggravated an old foot injury this week and have been hobbling around. I finally had it looked at and was told that since I am so old it is probably arthritis, gave me some Motrin and said get used to it. Jokingly, I asked my boss if arthritis that was worthy of a purple heart and he said I would have had to also cut myself on the paperwork. Oh well. Maybe next time.

Here I am, finally counting the days. Two weeks from today I leave the IZ on my way home. The trip will be long and arduous but because I get to see all of you at the end of the journey I will have a smile every single day. In fact I can honestly say I have never had a bad day here but there have been some very challenging days.

We are up to 128 soccer balls with 9 from Metter Kiwanis club and 10 from Abbie's OB ward going to southern Iraq. I am so proud of all of you, I just can't express the pride I have in my family and friends - Thank you Thank you Thank you.

Thanks also for your continued support and prayers. I look forward to seeing you soon.

The year is going well for me. Mail came yesterday for the first time in 6 days and I received 29 Soccer balls from St Marys Kiwanis plus another 50 pounds of clothes. In addition to that I got 4 cards. Even though I appreciate all the cards and letters, please do not send anything else to me in Iraq. I hope to be home before it would arrive.

Thanks again for your continued support -- ال_PR_ht

Happy New year to you. I can now officially say I will be home THIS month. I hate to wish my life away but I do look forward to going home. Although there is so much more here that I want to do. Kind of mixed feelings. I didn't celebrate last night but I did hear gun fire from others celebrating. I worked today so the year is already flying by.
I wish you the very best health, wealth and happiness for 2008.
See you soon.........:-)

My adventure continues. This week I visited the Al Rasheed hotel in Baghdad. I also received more soccer balls from SWFLANT and daughter Elizabeth. Grand daughter Amara's First grade class made Christmas cards for the troops and I handed some out and gave the rest to a priest to give to single soldiers he knows. The cards are so cute like "thanks for win the war" and "thanks for freedom". Everybody just loved them.

I did fill up the Misc December Photo album so I can not post a picture of a friend who just got married in Thailand and rode up on an elephant!
Christmas was lonely without you and I wish I was in Milwaukee for the Tommy Riemann, New Years Day 2008, Polar Bear Ride for MDA, Sponsored By The Overload Bar in West Allis, WI . They Ride to Bradford Beach to see the Polar Bears swim in Lake Michigan and then return to Overload Bar. Last year Abbie actually became a polar bear!
No snow or rain here yet but it has been chilly, 30s at night and 50-60s during the day.

Merry Christmas to one and all. Yesterday one of the Iraqi cleaning ladies brought me a tin of Iraqi cookies she had made in thanks for the soccer balls. I enjoyed them and shared them on your behalf. Today the Iraqis brought in Flat Bread, Cheese and honey and it was all very good. I have not had much Iraqi food so this has been a special treat.

We also had a few American elves delivering candy and cookies to our desks. I am happy to report that I had oatmeal for breakfast today, oatmeal cookies!

Thank you for the Christmas blessing you have shared with me throughout the year. This visit to Iraq and given me such a great appreciation of you and I have been humbled by your generosity to the children of Iraq.

May the spirit of Christmas fill your heart with love and joy.

I can't believe how fast the time fly’s. Sorry I have not kept you up on my mail call. Since I last wrote we are now up to 74 Soccer Balls plus so much much more. Kim sent shoes, Ginger sent soccer uniforms and equipment, Hank sent school supplies and backpacks, Florence sent balls and Steve sent balls. Abbie's brother Steve also included cookies for me, way to go Steve!

I continue to be overwhelmed by your out pouring of support.

There are so many people gone for Christmas, plus this is an Islamic holiday so it is very quiet here. But these still seems to be plenty to do.

Monday, 17 December 2007

Location: Baghdad, Iraq

The soccer balls are becoming the stars of my pictures. So keep checking for new photos. Yesterday I received 19 balls from Brian Fitzpatrick at Ambrosi in Lithia Springs, Georgia.

As Christmas approaches please remember to keep all of the young families back home without their mom or dad this year because they are here doing some very important work. If you know a family, give them a call and thank them for THEIR service this Christmas season.

My son-in-law Eric is out on a submarine again this Christmas and I am very proud of his service and understand the hardship on his family. We all owe so much to these young people making sacrifices for us. Keep them all in your prayers.

Another great day here in Baghdad. Friday is like my Weekend because we only work 1/2 days (6 hours) so I slept until 8am. I was so surprised because nothing woke be up, no helicopters, no camp announcements and no people banging around.

Then I received a big box from my Uncle Lloyd and Aunt Irene in Green Bay with 8 soccer balls plus school supplies etc. Looks like the Giese clan is coming through too. We are now at 50 balls and I really need to get these things out of the office before I no longer have room to work, darn the bad luck!

Take a look at More Misc December Pictures for pictures of the soccer balls.

I am so proud of all of you and thankful for such great Family and Friends. See you soon

Althought I know I am in Baghdad, it feels like Santa's Workshop at the North pole. I just received 125 pounds of soccer balls, equipment, shirts etc from Giner and plus a ball from Ann. Ann also had a Novena of Mass offered for me and my friend Mike at the National Shrine of St Jude. How neat is that!
I just can't wait to give more stuff out. So far you are up to 42 balls donated.
Thank you very very much.

Lots of new pictures in the Misc December folder for your viewing pleasure.

I hope all is well and that you stay safe and healthy for the holidays

Sunday, 09 December 2007

Location: Baghdad, Iraq

You are still coming through with the soccer balls. Today I received two from Abbie plus two from Cousin Deb's longtime friend Virginia Nemmers in Des Moines Iowa. I think this makes it official this is now a national project becasue I have received donations from Wisconsin, Maine, Georgia, Florida, California, New York and Iowa. Thank you so much for the support you are showing me and the children of Iraq. You have really turned what could have been a depressing Christmas into a really blessed experience for me.

Please remember to keep the young troops in your prayers while they are still performing a very difficult mission.

Wednesday, 05 December 2007

Location: Baghdad, Iraq

Yesterday I went out to an Iraqi Neighborhood in the IZ. (see new pictures posted) We were able to pass out things to about 30 families including 20 soccer balls. The balls are like gold and the kids take them home immediately. We worked hard to ensure each family gets only one but that didn't go to well. Next time the balls will need to be included in the donation bags and given to the families.

I am always humbled by these poor places, my heart aches when I see the conditions these children live in. Many were barefoot or only flip flops, I know I can't say thongs, well they are running around in broken glass, chucks of metal and stagnant water.

I am sorry I didn't get more soccer ball pictures but the grab for the balls and immediately dart away so nobody takes if from them. Boy oh boy do I have the stories to share with you.

Thanks so much for your generosity that allows me to participate in these humanitarian missions.

A great day to report to you. Today is the first day I have seen rain since I left Georgia in August. It was a very loud thunderstorm but not too much rain. It did feel good.

Later in the morning, I went to an elementary school to start delivering some of the school supplies and soccer balls you provided. It was a lot of fun but we could not actually hand out the stuff as I would have liked. There is more coming and we did not pass out everything I have.

Then we got to stroll around the market area. I almost forgot about the war for a minute except with I look at the pictures and see all the guns in the school.

Life is good because of you....thanks

Friday, 30 November 2007

I have created a Misc December Pictures folder already because November folder is now full.

Received four soccer balls from my Mother today - Thank Mom...so the project is going very well. Life in Baghdad is doing great, I hope you are doing as well. Thanks you for everything.

Thursday, 29 November 2007

Location: Green Zone, Iraq

I posted a picture of Butch Darrow, ex-SWFLANT employee enjoying Thankgiving dinner south of Baghdad. Hope you enjoy.

I also checked to see when I need to plan my trip home, the guy said now. So it is official, I will be back in Washington DC on 29 JAN 08 and back to St Marys by 30 JAN 08. I hope to take a trip to Wisconsin to enjoy a little winter before I go back to work.

Again I thank your for your contined support and prayers and I will apparently be seeing you soon.

Brunswick Kiwanis Club has really come through. I just recieved a dozen soccer balls from them today. That doubles the amount to 24. I am getting a good workout just coming back from the mail drop.

Thanks for all you are doing to make a difference in my life and the life of the children of Iraq.

Sunday, 25 November 2007

Location: Cradle of Civilization, Iraq

This place is sure a mixture of extreme emotions. This has not been a good day for many reasons but then the mail came in. You are really coming through for the children of Iraq. We are up to 12 soccer balls, 16 backpacks and a ton of school supplies. Thanks SWFLANT, Deb & Wing, Kim and Cheryl. I know we have received a ton because I have to carry it but the blessings continue because some young Iraqi who did not speak English just took the heaviest box and carried it the longest part of the way. Life is good because of you....thanks for helping me see the good side of life, once again!

Sunday, 18 November 2007

Location: Baghdad, Iraq

Thanks for a great early Thanksgiving. The guys who brought the mail today were a little crabby.
Today I received a huge care package from SWFPAC and all of a sudden the Navy is real popular here. I am humbled by the donations and I know you all know I love sharing. You should have seen me trying to explain beef jerky to the Iraqis.
I also received the first soccer ball and it came from my Father and his wife Jean. I am thrilled to get this project started, especially at Thanksgiving. You all give me so very much to be thankful for. It now seems like counting my blessing is a full time job. Best wishes and thanks again for your prayers and support.
I received a box from Abbie too.

Friday, 16 November 2007

Location: Baghdad, Iraq

This just a short note to thank you for your constant well wishes and prayers. Since I have been back in Baghdad it has been very quite, quick knock on wood! I attribute the peace to you and your prayers.

Also many of you are gearing up to answer my request for Soccer Balls and I appreciate that. My cousin Debbie in Atlanta has dubbed it "Soccer Balls for Peace" and has gotten many of her friends involved and they are even sending soccer equipment and jerseys for the kids. I believe in the Kiwanis statement that is we can change the world one child at a time and I am very excited about this opportunity to make a difference. I will keep reporting on the progress.

Also, thanks for sending pictures; I have posted some of them. I know most of you want to see Iraq but I like to show you everything that is important including people from here and home. I hope more of you share a few pictures that I can share. Let me know if there is something you want to see a picture of.

Today is 1/2 day Friday but it is now time to get to work so I wish you all a great Army Corps of Engineers day and thank you all for your overwhelming support.

Monday, 12 November 2007

Have I told you lately that I miss each and everyone of you. The long days may time fly which means that it will go slow when we are together again. Thanks for your prayers and support.

Also, check out a few more picture in Misc November.

Response: Biker Bob, The end result was 159 balls and over 300 pounds of school supplies and clothes. This weekend is an other outing, unfortunately I will be in Kuwait. Thanks for all of your great support, prayers and well wishes. I will see you in about 2 weeks......
From Mary
Let's set this straight - I did NOT ask to see the cheese bra. In fact, I specifically said I did not want to see the cheese bra!!!! No wonder the President didn't give you a raise - ya just can't get some things right! Stay safe and see ya soon!
Response: Oh, I thought what you said is the opposite of what you meant! I will never get that right.
But now that you have seen it, do you want me to pick one up for you. You may need it for the Superbowl.
From Mary
No way will I even ask what a "cheese" bra is. That is not a picture I want to have in my head! Counting the days til ya make it back to SWFLANT. I know you are excited! Stay safe and see ya soon!!!!!!!!!!
Response: Mary--Check the Misc January Pictures, no that is not Abbie. I really do love it here and will miss the work and the Iraqis. Today one lady brought in a cake for me. Shi'a holiday and time to celebrate, I guess. See you soon, lets plan for Broomelli Boys
From Dianne
Hey Allen:

So happy you are on the downhill slope. uess that's why they had to have a lttle snow there. We are looking forward to your safe return home. I tried emailing you a couple of times and it kept popping back to me so I'm trying this way. I really enjoy reading about your days/evenings. Very interesting to say the least. We are looking forward to the next Packer playoff game. Who knows....maybe they will make it to the Super Bowl and you'll be home to see it. I'll have to send you a cheesehead if that happens since I'm sure you are a Packer Backer!! Until later, stay safe and love to you from all of us cuzzins!!!

Dianne
Response: Hey Cuz--Great to hear from you. I was excited that both the Packer and Jaguars made it to the play offs this year. Since the Packers are still in, I am pulling for them. I will be in Wisconsin for the Super bowl; perhaps Abbie will wear her cheese bra! Thanks for the support, see you soon.
From Linda Thomas
Hi Allan, Great to hear you're on the way home soon. Safe travels and be proud of all you have done during your time in Iraq. I know the place will mean so much more to you when you're back in the comforts of home and you can empathize with all the struggles that continue to go in in that country. We had a blast on the cruise. Pami and I behaved ourselves (most of the time) but had some great laughs, great memories and great pina coladas!!! If anyone asks one more time if we are 'twins' I'm going to deck them!!! :)
Take care and see you around the 'hood!
Linda xx
Response: Linda--I am so happy you enjoyed the cruise. So did the laughs, memories and pina coladas come in that order? thanks for your continued support and best wishes for a great 2008
From Liz Taylor
I'm here catching up again, and we WOULD be enjoying the cooler weather if it was just cool...but it has gone WAY past that. Lows in the high 20's at night...Wednesday afternoon when I left work, it was a balmy 39! It's supposed to be warmer this weekend. Sure do hope they're right about that!

I know it will take you time to adjust to being back, such a different work environment and way of life, but we sure do look forward to seeing you back at SWFLANT again!
Response: Liz--I really look forward to seeing you too. I will not care if is below 0, I want to go to the beach, sit on my porch and breath dust free air. But I still have 3 weeks to enjoy Baghdad and I do love it here. The work, the people and the location are all so enjoyable that I hope time starts to slow down a little. Best wishes for 2008
From Mardis Price
Allan, I didn't realize your tour was over. Sorry I missed out on the front end; however, I'm glad I know you. You did good!. Mardis
Response: Mardis--Nice to hear from you and my tour is not quiet over yet. I do not head home until the last week in January but it will actually take me 6 days from the time I leave here until I get home! Best wishes for 2008 and thanks for your support
From Mary
Happy New Year! Wow - it is almost time for you to wind it up and return stateside. Guess time really does fly when you are having fun! Can't wait for you to get back. Will be great seeing you again. Hope your New Years celebration was as "calm" as mine was. Miss ya - stay safe.
Response: Mary -- I really look forward to seeing you too. Time is rushing by so before you blink again, I should be home. Hope you are enjoying the cooler weather, it is starting to warm up here again. Best wishes :-}
From Jean & John
Glad to hear that you are on the down slide. I know how you feel wanting to get more done and knowing you will not have the time.
Don't get crazy and let them talk you into another run. You need to be back with your family . Gods speed
Your Cus John
Response: Hey John--So nice to hear from you in NM. I hope mother nature is treating you better than those crazy yankees in the land of cheese. The down slide is feeling pretty good about now so there is not chance I will be staying for another round. Thanks for your prayers and support and pass my love to Jean.
From Margaret & Lee
Hi Allan,

Hope you had an uneventful Christmas considering the events in Pakistan. We wish you a very Happy New Year and safe return to us! I know Abbie is counting the hours!

You continue in our thoughts and prayers.

Margaret & Lee
Response: Margaret & Lee -- Thank you for your support and prayers. I have really been inspiried by following the work of Kiwanis while here and glad to know all the great things you continue to do. I did have a quiet Christmas and hopefully a quiet New Years. Thank you and best wishes and good cheer for 2008
From Edith & Sharla

Response: Edith & Sharla -- Best wishes to you for 2008. I hope it is a year of good health, many riches and peace.
From Liz Taylor
Hi Allan, Just spent some time catching up on your blog and checking out the pictures you have posted. I was happy to see that the school supplies, etc. we sent arrived safely, and I think there are more soccer balls on the way. I would love to see the look of excitement shining from those eyes when they receive these gifts. It was so wonderful of you to think of the project, and thank you so much for making it possible for us to be a small part of that. Have a joyous and safe Christmas and New Year's, and we look very forward to having you back with us soon.
Response: Liz - Thank you for the warm wishes. The pictures truly do not capture the joy but I hope you will be able to see it in my eyes when I tell you thank you in person. Best wishes for the best Christmas ever...
From Mary
Allan,
No news - but haven't written this week so thought I might best touch base with you. Hope you are fine and looking forward to Christmas. Lots of different traditions for you to observe this year. Always know you will be at home for Christmas - even if this year it is only in our hearts and on our minds. Miss ya and as always, stay safe.
Response: Mary -- Thank you so much for your support. I have passed the 3/4 point in my tour and now feel rushed to get things done. Luckily the hoildays don't get in the way of work, that way I have a few extra days to get things done. I do miss the festive activities but I also enjoy learning about the Iraqi culture and traditions. Yesterday at the end of an official meeting the highest ranking Iraqi wished us all a Merry Christmas....I thought that was nice.
From ralph giese
Dear Allan:
Haven't been able to write sooner. I had truble on the computer. Our neighbor came over and straightened me out. It wasn't the computer it was me.

Everything here is fine. The weather is very cold with lots of snow on the ground.

Kay and John are coming tomarrow. Looking forward to seeing them.

Abbie sent a package for Catherine to us. That was very nice of her to get the box wrapped for her.

Looking for a bright and happy Christmas. Wish we could all bee together to celebrate. Hope we can get together when you come ;home.

Happy Holidays and best and brightest Christmas to you.

More later.
Love Jeaan and Dad
Response: Jean & Dad -- Thank you so much for writing. My computer often has user error but that is why we have friend and family - to fix our computer problems. Save a little snow for me and I hope to see you in February.
From Edith & Sharla

Expect some more soccer balls soon.

Thanks again,
Steve
Response: Steve--It is my pleasure to stimulate the Iraqi economy. As for the soccer balls, my hootch and office are starting to look like a gym but keep em' coming.
From Yer Cuz Mike
Hey Y'all... just spent the last hour browsing this site and it's amazing, as are you. It was 80 deg. here in Va. today so I decided to call Bob in Milwaukee to bust his chops about the Wes'Cawsun weather and we got to talking about you. We're all so very proud of you cuz and want you to know that we'll all be thinking of you on New Years Day during the Polar Bear Ride. We'd have a missing man formation but we haven't fugured out how to propell a motorcycle, riderless, down National Avenue. We WILL make sure that every one of us has a beer in your honor though!!!! In the mean time Bro, "Ride Safe" and get your butt back home soon!!!
We Love ya Bro!!!
Response: Cuz--You all are so amazing, perhaps the missing man formation is saving a bar stool for me. I can't wait to ride with you again. I will be home for Daytona Bike week and plan to take advantage of it. Anybody care to join me?
From Edith and Sharla
Hi Allan,
Howdy from Texas!
Please give us shipping instructions/information!
Texas is collecting shoes for the children.
You and the staff stay save.
May God bless you all.
Response: Edith & Sharla, So nice to hear from you again. I will send you and email about where to send stuff for children. I am working with a friend Mike to help an orphanage and widows home. Women are not always treated well here and if they lose a husband life can be cruel so anything you can do to help is very welcome. That's why I love you both!
From Laurie Hipshire
Allan,
I am just amazed by your pictures and your stories! THANK YOU for all you and your commrades are doing over there! The joy on the faces of those children....nothing is better than that!! I will be sending lots of clothes (my children have out grown but are in excellent shape!) and toys your way to hand out to the children. Are there any restrictions on what I can/cannot send or how it's sent? We miss your smiling face around the halls here at SWFLANT! Peace be with you my friend! God bless! Laurie
Response: Laurie - Thanks so much for writing. I too hope all is well with you. Thanks for your support and donations. I will send shipping direction to you.
From Mary
Allan,
Can not thank you enough for sharing your "soccer ball" pictures! It is hard for me to type right now - what with all the tears in my eyes!! Quite touching. Keep up the good work for us. The smiles on the kids faces says it all. Stay safe and hurry home.
Response: Mary -- Thanks for your continued support and helping to make a difference
From Deb Milbrath
Allan, those pictures of the kids with the soccer balls made me really tear up!!!! Gads I feel good about helping out. I shared the pix with an administrator at Ambrosi (the company I'm with right now) and she sent them out company wide. Here's a note I got from one of the main organizers of the Ambrosi drive to collect the soccer balls:

Response: Deb--Your points are so well taken, we all know that in every war the children suffer the most and if we can put a smile on them for a moment I think we have change the world, if only for a moment. The best part is those moment get commented. They will remember the American's everytime they are playing with the balls. Thanks so much. When I get back I will put all the pictures on a CD and send to you.

Hi Allan,
all I can say is whoo!
Most of all I feel honored to know you personel. Not only as Chief of Utilities Division at USMCA Aschaffenburg-Germany, also as a friend. I always believed and I still do that there is a reason for every step we take. Well just two weeks ago Sharla and myself decided it's time now to get a computer again ! Today we received from Abbie the X-Mas Card, and here I am finally corresponding with you the fast way! Actually I'm so exited that I don't know how to express all that's going through my mind. I like your web page and will check on it every day! Great pictures! Our prayers are with you.
Response: Edith -- What a great day to hear from you. I feel so blessed for knowing you and am thrilled that you now have a computer again. Thanks for your support.

Response: Deb -- What a joy to hear from you and let everybody know the great stuff you have been doing for me. The Wendt clan is sure a powerful force and I love being part of it. Ginger said she mail 6 boxes of balls and gear. I will really try to get pictures of the kids playing with the balls, but it is enough to know they are going to really needy kids. I love "high 5'ing" Iraqi elementary school kids. Thanks so very very much for your support. With this much hope, peace can't be far off. At least that is a nice thought!
